Fellow, Shaping the Future of Advanced Manufacturing andValue Chains, World Economic Forum (WEF); Chief Evangelist, TRIA; Adjunct Lecturer, Singapore Polytechnic – Jovan Tan, AY14 Diploma in Engineering with Business SP graduate, wears many hats and it can be hard to pin him down to a specific title. There are, however, three common threads running through his portfolios and they are technology, sustainability and entrepreneurship.

Jovan is the founder of the RIGHT (Restorative Innovation toGrow Humanity with Technology) Foundation. Be prepared to ditch obsolete notions of innovation, sustainable development and economic growth after meeting technopreneur Mr Jovan Tan. Read on to uncover what goes on behind his groundbreaking research in Restorative Innovation, among his other accomplishments.

Founder of RIGHT Foundation

Incorporated as a Non-Profit Organisation, the Restorative Innovation to Grow Humanity with Technology (RIGHT) Foundation has been established to advance the body of knowledge for and improve the world through Restorative Innovation. It is also a movement in itself.

“Sustainability is of paramount importance today because the resource strain on Earth is unprecedented. We are extracting more than we can replenish and if this goes on, the ecosystem we live in will collapse” Jovan explained.

Since 2017, he has been working closely with renowned researcher and educator Professor Virginia Cha to develop Restorative Innovation, an innovation economic model that demonstrates the possibility of designing commercially viable solutions that has a greater purpose of doing good across health, humanity and the environment.

Helping More to Succeed

Passionate entrepreneurs drive the efforts of the SAFRA Entrepreneurs’ Club to nurture both existing and aspiring business owners.

To succeed, one must first help others succeed. Jovan Tan, 23, a committee member for nearly two years with the SAFRA Entrepreneurs’ Club (SEC), believes in this mantra. SEC was formed in 2014 to nurture entrepreneurial spirit through continuous learning and networking.

Having worked on two “micro businesses” that didn’t pan out, Jovan, now a venture associate with TRi5 Ventures, can empathise with the struggles of budding businessmen. “We want to create a support system and a self-driven community for both entrepreneurs and aspirants to interact, bounce ideas and collaborate,” he says.

“I want locals, born-and-bred Singaporean entrepreneurs to succeed.” His committee colleagues, Nicholas Chan, 39, and Bobby Ng, 37, agree.

Full-time Job, Full-time Student

The typical three-year SP journey is usually a busy one filled with course modules, projects, presentations and CCAs. Some others also take part in community service programmes and competitions. Is there still room to hold down a full-time job? Well, Jovan Tan tells SPIRIT that it is possible.

When Jovan Tan said that he had no life as a poly student, he really meant it, or at least half of it. Movies outings were rare and there was no free time to chill out. But the graduating student from the Diploma in Engineering with Business (DEB) was not complaining because, after all, he got compensated for not doing stuff that his course mates were doing (besides studying of course).
